| Join James Pittar swimming for Fred Hollows... |
The Fred Hollows Foundation is an apt charity for James to support, for the foundation works to prevent blindness, and James himself is blind. James is a remarkable fellow who has completed major marathon swims on six of seven continents (we're not sure about Antarctica).
Swim date is Sunday, September 23, starting from Collaroy at 8am. James will swim 12km from Collaroy to Shelly Beach. At Shelly, he will be joined by 19 other swimmers to swim the final 2km across to North Steyne via Queenscliff. He is inviting swimmers to raise funds in support of the Fred Hollows Foundation and to swim with him.
"My open water swim will take me along the stunning Sydney coastline from Collaroy to Shelly beach where 19 other swimmers will join me to swim back to near Queenscliff beach, and together the 20 of us arrive into North Steyne beach," James says.
He has chosen the total number of 20 swimmers, he says, because 2012 marks 20 years of The Fred Hollows Foundation. The Foundation's goal is "to end avoidable blindness by the year 2020". And James aims to raise $20,000 to help keep alive the late Fred Hollows's dream. "Four out of five people who are blind do not have to be," James tells us. "Together we can make a difference the world can see."

"If each of us raise just $1,000, that would represent restoring sight to 800 people," James says.
In 2011, The Fred Hollows Foundation worked with partners to perform 282,714 cataract operations and other eye treatments, to train 10,757 clinical and support staff, build or renovate 50 medical facilities, and to deliver $3.38 million of equipment for use in developing countries."
